Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali, a Christian from a leading Muslim family, speaks at our next men’s breakfast on ‘Standing Firm for Christ’. Bishop Michael was born in Karachi, Pakistan; his father had converted to faith in Christ but most of the family are Shi’a Syeds. Michael went to a Catholic school and came to personal faith in Christ at university because of the work of an Anglican chaplain who also encouraged him into mission and ministry. After teaching and working in parishes, Michael became Bishop of Raiwind in 1984, the youngest bishop in the Anglican Communion. In 1994 he was enthroned Bishop of Rochester, and was the the first Asian religious leader to serve in the House of Lords. He has served as General Secretary of the Church Mission Society.
Now based in London and Oxford, Michael is president of OXTRAD whose work is to prepare Christians for mission and ministry in situations where the Church is under pressure and suffering from persecution. He is also an advocate for the suffering church for Gafcon where he uses his global experience to bring cases of hardship and persecution to the attention of the Church and the world.
